Magic: The Gathering Reality Fracture: Release Date, Story and Everything In the Box

Reality Fracture is Magic: The Gathering's newest set, released worldwide on October 2, 2026, after Prerelease events ran September 25 through October 1. It's the third and final in-universe Standard set of the year, closing out Jace Beleren's story arc as his plan to remake the Multiverse finally goes wrong. Here's the story, the new mechanics, and exactly what's in every product.

What's the story?

Jace Beleren, the most powerful mind-mage in the Multiverse, has spent the last two sets building toward one goal: a reality where his plan actually works. In Reality Fracture, he gets it. He creates the Echoverse, a mirrored version of the Multiverse built exactly the way he wanted it, and it starts pulling the real Multiverse apart to take its place. The set follows Chandra, Liliana, Ajani, Vraska and Garruk as they confront the Echoverse and "the Theorist" across ten story episodes, each running into a familiar face twisted into something new.

What's new: Echoed Pairs

The headline mechanic is Echoed Pairs: familiar planeswalkers and characters printed alongside their Echoverse counterpart, in a different color identity with a different set of abilities. Chandra, Torch of Defiance gets an Echoverse twin called Chandra, Chill of Compliance, imagining a version of her who never revolted on Kaladesh and joined the Consulate instead. Liliana, Garruk, Ajani and Vraska each get their own "what if" version too, spanning dozens of cards across every rarity.

A few other new pieces to know:

Prepare returns as a mechanic, including on the set's headliner card, Bloodline Recollector (draw 3 and lose 3 life if three creatures died this turn, checking the whole battlefield, not just yours). It's built as a twisted callback to Ancestral Recall.
Empower Jace creates a 0-loyalty Jace planeswalker token, then adds loyalty counters to it. The token can surveil for 1 loyalty or draw a card for 3.
The Echoverse's five factions are built around new two-color "colleges": Fatehold (WU), Theorix (UB), Stingerquill (BR), Konstrari (RG) and Vigorbloom (GW).

The Special Guests

Reality Fracture brings back Special Guests, ten desirable reprints slipped into packs at a low rate (1 in 55 Play Boosters, or in traditional foil in Collector Boosters):

These stay legal in whatever formats they were already legal in (Splinter Twin doesn't become Standard-legal just because it's in the set), but if you open one in a Draft, Sealed or Prerelease pool, you can play it in that event.

Chase cards to watch for

Reality Fracture chase cards: serialized Bloodline Recollector, Shattered Mirror Omnipresence, Special Guest Splinter Twin

Serialized Bloodline Recollector: the set's headliner, with only 500 serialized copies worldwide, in a throwback full-art frame with a double rainbow foil treatment. Collector Boosters only, extremely low pull rate, always printed in English regardless of the booster's language.
Shattered Mirror cards: 13 cards (5 rare, 8 mythic) whose alternate-reality artwork calls back to an iconic piece from Magic's past. Non-foil versions can show up in Play Boosters; the fancy facet foil versions are Collector Booster exclusives. See them in the full card gallery below.
Japan Showcase cards: 10 cards illustrated by Japanese artists, back for the first time since Lorwyn Eclipsed.
Borderless Tower basic lands: 15 lands (3 art styles per basic) designed to stack into a single panorama of the Echoverse's towers.
