Wizards of the Coast keeps a separate banned list for each Magic format, and Vintage also has a restricted list. This page shows every banned and restricted card in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Pauper, Commander, Legacy and Vintage, with its picture. The lists were checked against Wizards' official page on October 5, 2026, and each format checks Scryfall's live card data when you open it, so a new change can show up here before this page is edited. Wizards' page is always the official list.
Last checked: October 5, 2026. The lists come from Wizards' Banned and Restricted page. Card pictures and the live check come from Scryfall.

What do banned and restricted mean?
The rules, according to Wizards
- Banned: if a card is on your format's banned list, you may not include it in your deck or sideboard. Doing so makes your deck illegal to play in sanctioned tournaments for that format.
- Restricted: you may include only a single copy of the card, counting your main deck and sideboard together. Currently only Vintage uses a restricted list.
- Each format has its own lists. A card banned in Modern may still be legal in Standard.
- They apply to Constructed formats, not Limited formats like draft and sealed.
Wizards says cards are usually banned when they enable a deck or play style that heavily skews the play environment, or when they simply prove too powerful in their format.

Cards banned by rule
Some bans cover whole groups of cards instead of naming each one, so you won't see them as pictures above. According to Wizards:
- Conspiracy cards (25 cards with the Conspiracy card type) are banned in Legacy, Vintage and Commander.
- Ante cards (9 cards that reference playing for ante) are banned in Legacy, Vintage and Commander.
- Sticker and Attraction cards (every card that brings a sticker or an Attraction into the game) are banned in Pauper, Legacy and Vintage.
- Offensive cards (cards whose art, text, name or a combination of them is racially or culturally offensive) are banned in all formats. Wizards calls this list a work in progress.
- Lutri, the Spellchaser is banned in Commander only as a companion.
Wizards' Banned and Restricted page links the full list for each group.
Cards that are banned only on MTG Arena
Two cards on Wizards' list apply only to MTG Arena Best-of-One matches: Leyline of Resonance in Standard and Tibalt's Trickery in Pioneer. They are shown in those formats with an Arena only label and don't affect paper events.
How does this page stay up to date?
The lists here were copied from Wizards' page on October 5, 2026. When you open a format, this page also asks Scryfall for that format's current banned list and compares it with what is shown. If Scryfall shows a change, the page displays the new list and tells you what changed. We also check Wizards' page against this one on a regular schedule and update the post when a list changes. Scryfall updates its data after Wizards announces a change, and Wizards' page is the official list, so if anything ever looks different, trust Wizards.
